To My Website

Since 1966 I have been a coin dealer specializing in Asian, African, and Ethnographic monies. Part of my customer service has always been to recommend catalogs and reference works on the monies I sell, and to offer these books when I can. Below are what I feel are the most imporant or standard titles in these fields. In choosing works to list, I have given preference to newer works, English language, and to catalogs over in-depth references. Works are listed whether in stock or not. You will find many additional and more specialized refernces at my website, which includes pages for New titles,     China: Ancient & Sycee,     China: Modern    Japan-Korea-Vietnam,     Thailand-SE Asia, and General Worldwide.   Many books with brief descriptions below are more fully reviewed in my essay Basic References on Chinese cash . Where AUTHOR or TITLE is a link, it will show you COVER or SAMPLE PAGE.

Placing an Order   Email me at SSemans@aol.com, giving author, title, and price (or just cut and paste the line). CHINA: CAST & SYCEE
Burger, W.Ch'ing Cash Until 1735   In-depth work on Ch'ing Dynasty through Yung-cheng with a wealth of information on Ming and Ch'ing monetary systems, coining process, and 6 huge coin charts by year, mint & submint. Cribb, JosephA Catalogue of Sycee in the British Museum: Chinese Silver Currency Ingots c.1750-1933   More than a catalog of the BM (including Kann) collection, over 1300 pieces are actually classified by the shape/size/inscription characteristics used by the issuers to define their place of origin and circulation.  A virtual sycee type catalog of 92 classes & 272 varieties with photos & translations.  Chapters on history, manufacture, use, inscriptions, forgeries; Chinese preface.  Authored by the Curator of Oriental Numismatics at the BM and one of the few serious Western scholars in the field.  Highly recommended despite the price, especially for the non-Chinese reader.  368p+71pl, 276x219m, hc, 1992  L£95150.00

Hartill, DavidQing Cash   If you have trouble making sense of Burger's year-by-year charts and long for an intermediate - and comprehensible - breakdown of the basic Emperor/mint types, this forthcoming work should be the answer. And of course, it will cover the whole dynasty, not just the first rulers. The bad news is it will probably be rather expensive, and not well distributed outside Europe/UK. If you've bought books on Chinese coins from me before (and I have your current email address) I'll let you know the details when it is published.INQUIRE

Qian JiajuA History of Chinese Currency    Beautiful color photos of knife, spade, cash, sycee, struck, and plenty of paper money. Not a catalog, not comprehensive, but a great sampler/introduction to Chinese money. English text. 220p, hc, 7.5x10", 1983R1992. Recommended.29.50
Schjoth, F.Chinese Currency    Despite numerous shortcomings, this work is reasonably comprehensive, has background information on the coinage, and a well-recognized, simple numbering system, so remains a standard among Western collectors. Unfortunately there are no low-cost editions on the market presently, though you can borrow one and photocopy it rather easily. Or, check www.abebooks.com for unbound photocopy reprints in the $20-30 range. The 1929 original is no better than the reprints & is for bibliophiles. The 1976 London reprint follows the original, but is not well bound and the front cover tends to work loose. The 1965 reprint contains additions (sometimes useful) by Virgil Hancock and is generally the favored edition.   Original 1929 Ed  ($125) SOLD;   RR1965 (Hancock) hc  $75;   R1976 (London) hc  $7070..00

Bruce, ColinUnusual World Coins  All the oddball stuff (bullion pcs, coinlike medals, patterns, fantasies, etc.) that doesn't quite fit in the SCWC (Krause-Mishler) series. Both the 2nd (1988) and 3rd (1992) eds. have the best single-source listing of China fantasy dollars anywhere. Out of print and exceptionally hard to find, but a 4th edition is expected c.2003-04.SOLD
Cheng Ren JieChinese Copper Coins (Zhongguo Tong Yuan Ch'ien Shang)  Cat. #, specs, rarity ratings, & excellent color photo of good specimens for 785 types, including MANY not in Krause. By Taiwan's leading collector, it is by far the best book ever done on Chinese struck coppers.  218p, sc, 199732.50
Dong WenchaoAn Overview of China's Gold & Silver Coins of Past Ages  The "Chinese Kann." Fully bilingual, beautifully illustrated with 1418 color photos and amazingly handsome rubbings, at least as comprehensive as Kann with meaningful varieties and many, many unpublished types, fineness, type numbering, rarity guide, unpublished Tibet patterns, informative appendices, but lacking Kann's monetary history. Covers AR and AV Ch'ienlung through 1949, Fantasies, Xinjiang, Tibet.  872p, 21x29c, hc, 1993  PRICE UP100.00
Gabrisch, KarlGeld Aus Tibet   Concise history of Tibetan money and fairly comprehensive photo-illustrated type catalog including newly published items. Excellent photos. Best in-depth work on Tibet. German text.  74p+43pl, 21x21cm, sc, 199028.50
Kann, EduardIllustrated Catalog of Chinese Coins  Longtime standard in-depth work on gold, silver, nickel  Plates in both editions are mediocre, but the 1954 is slightly better.  1st 1954  $125.00;  2nd 1966
Li Xiao PingZhong Guo Tong Yuan Tu Dian 1080 struck coppers listed, possibly more variety-depth than Cheng. Excellent rubbings often show detail better than a photo. Market values. Readers' evaluations would be appreciated. 359p, 6x10, sc, 200024.50
Rose, Frank MChopmarks   Information, speculation, photos   54p, sc, 198712.50
Tibet Autonomous Region Numismatic Society, ed.Currency of Tibet, China     This huge, 492p, 8.5x11.5" hardcover is merely the photos volume in a projected 3-volume set! The best features are the many dies (205 of them!), printing blocks and banknote oddities, weights (multiple views), scales, a gold bar, sycee, counterstamps, mint errors, coin jewelry, tamgas, and other odd objects, but the basic coin presentation is disappointing. No doubt close study of the hundreds of photos will pay off here and there, but there is no detailed breakdown of varieties, nor analysis of complex series such as Gaden tankas. The banknote photos are gorgeous, but the coin photos and specimen quality are highly variable, the coppers being mostly too dark. All photos are color and the presentation is lavish. Little text, but all Chinese, including captions. Brief English preface and contents page. Four historical maps. 2002   One day we will see Nicholas Rhodes' book do a far better job at half the price, but if you can afford it, you will have fun with this book meanwhile.150.00
