Message from Dr.T.D.Yih (15-Oct-98):
The large cash coin of the Yuan (Mongol) dynasty inscribed Dayuan tongbao (AD 1310) is the only coin known that uses the Phagsba (mongol square script) as main language. There are a few number of other Yuan cash that uses Phagsba numerals at the reverse side.
As far as I know there is only one other coin that bear a phagsba inscription. It is a piece issued by the Chaghatayids (Kubilay's contemporaries) in Xinjiang.
Illustrated is a Chaghatayid coin that forms part of a tri-lingual series of coins.
Below the name of Allah in the centre is the phagsba word BW (Chinese Bao) for currency. In contrast to the cash coin the character has not been written vertically, but horizontally.
A number of pieces have been reported to be found near the city of Kucha in Xinjiang. The pieces have been attributed to the time of one of the first Chaghatayid rulers Alughu (around 1260).
